Dark Void is an action adventure game set in that stalwart of sci-fi places – a parallel universe. Will, the hero of the tale and the character you control is flung there when his supposed routine air cargo flight crashes in the mysterious area known as the Bermuda Triangle. After this he gets trapped in the void where he soon becomes embroiled in a frantic fight for survival as the head of a group known only as The Survivors. These “survivors” have banded together to become a resistance group against an overpowering alien invasion (known as The Watches) as once again the Earth is in deadly peril. Will is accompanied by a female companion called Ava who, certainly at first guides him on his way. The game itself is a mixture of third person shooter companied with aerial dog fighting thanks to a jet pack which is one of the many weapons created by Nikola Tesla, a scientist working on the side of The Survivors and helping them kick the Watches arse. It is when Will is given one of these Jet Packs that the game truly begins. Before that you have around an hour walking around a jungle area, killing the aliens as and when they dare to raise their head. Guided by Ava’s voice you make your way around the jungle paradise getting used to the vertical combat that the game introduces. Yes in this game not only do you shoot all around you but at times up and down as well? This can be quite nauseating especially if you suffer from motion sickness but it is well worth pushing yourself though it and helps to make the game better than the average third person shooters out there. Once you get hold of the jet pack that brings a whole new other dynamic for the player to get used to as well. The controls are based on if you were flying an aeroplane and once you get used to them they are actually quite easy to understand, but before you do you will be crashing into things and again maybe getting a bit sick while you are at it. Graphics wise the game is detailed and colourful in places but unfortunately feels a little bit old fashioned in this post – Uncharted 2 world. Having said that however it is not the ugliest game we have ever seen created by the graphics engine and there is a marked degree in improvement once Will puts on the Jet Pack. Sound wise the main character is played by Nolan North who is also Nathan Drake in the aforementioned Uncharted series and maybe it is partially because of this that the game constantly seems to want to make you compare it to that title or make it seem that it desperately wants to be that. At the very least it makes Will a very likable lead character. Overall I like this game a lot, it has some truly exciting moments scattered throughout the levels. The game really starts to kick off once you get to Episode two and it has an intriguing and interesting storyline. Some people may criticise it because they will over compare it to other games that have been released but providing you do not do that and you take it as a game in its own merit it is actually an enjoyable game and if you want a new third person action game you could do far worse than to choose it.
