Demigod is an odd game in many ways, not least because it promises much and almost almost delivers but not quite.

It is also odd because despite being a RTS it has none of the base building elements of most RTS games and also you control just your Demigod and not vast troops in your army. There isn’t really a story to follow and although there is a single player skirmish and tournament mode it isn’t really a single player game – it is meant to be a multiplayer experience and unfortunately some bugs in the game prevent it from being a satisfactory one.

The game is actually, once you start playing it, a mixture of genres. It is a RTS but the developers have intermingled it with elements of an action game and also some role playing for good measure.

The idea behind the game is basically you choose which of the Demigods to play as and which of the various arenas you wish to do battle in. Then it is a question of destroying not only the other Demigods but also their minions that you find in various locations around the arena.

The single player tournament which really acts like a tutorial pits you against some computer controlled opponents but it has to be said that they are no-where near as subtle and ingenious in their strategies as a human opponent is.

Control wise the game is very easy to pick up and play. Basically the right mouse button is used to issue move and attack orders.

There are eight Demigods for you to choose from and each are completely different from one another in terms of appearance and abilities. They are however split into two different types. There are assassins who are excellent combatants and Generals which are excellent leaders of the minions out on the battlefield.

Multiplayer as I said is where the game excels but unfortunately for some reason it is not that easy to find a game etc to join. Now this may be that not many people are actually playing the game yet but there seems to be coding problems that let the game down. Maybe a patch in the very near future will sort this out but in my opinion it would have been better, especially in a title that relies so much on multiplayer, that this had been sorted before it was released.

Graphically if your machine can handle it on the higher settings then this game looks fantastic and is definitely one of the best looking games released on the pc this year. As I said the Demigods are designed individually but also they are animated beautifully. The arenas themselves are also beautifully constructed and there are some excellent visual effects to be seen.

Sound wise there is some excellent vocal acting to be found here with a very funny script including some perfect one-liners from the Demigods themselves. The music and sound effects are also well done but not fantastic and certainly do not live up to the rest of the game.

Overall there are some very good ideas here and it is almost an excellent game but its lack of real single player mode and the bugs that inherit the multiplayer mode force it to becoming just an ok game after all.

A flawed piece of genius.
