“You got your Japanese dating sim in my dungeon crawler! You got your dungeon crawler on my Japanese dating sim!” Then they both lick it, and for some reason it all just seems to come together in some sort of tasty concoction. There my friends, you have Persona 3 in a nutshell. Two games for one price, it is hard to beat a deal like that. Unless you are overly sensitive, if you are then you may have a problem with the way the Personas are summoned. Let me sum it up. Put magic gun to head, pull trigger, psyche manifestations with the ability to kick ass come out. It could be a little disturbing for some people, but there’s not really any overtly happy games in the Shin Megami Tensei series anyways.

I have to admit something here folks; I’ve always thought the idea of a dating sim was silly. I’m not sure I would ever have spent much time with one, even if there were naked girls involved. This game actually made me care about the people a little, and for me, that is an accomplishment. I wanted to try and help the people to maybe make their life a little better. Ok so it did help me, but it was for their benefit too.

I was quite happy to see the Velvet room back, and the nod to Persona 2 in there. I was also impressed with the way they captured the feel of a Japanese high school. I myself would not want to go to school six days a week, but when else are you going to find time to study in between killing demons? I would have liked more variety to the dungeons, but with all they put in here, it is a minor gripe.

There could have been a little more customization in the rest of the party, but I suppose that maybe that would have made for a little too much bookeeping. Your teammates perform admirably most of the time in battle, which is good because most of the time you do not have direct control over them.

The graphics were done well and fit the style of the game. They were not the best the PS2 has ever put out, but they did the job nicely. I was impressed with most of the voices, and none of them took away from the experience for me at all.

Overall, I would like to say I had a really good experience with this game, and that I hope they continue this series. I can’t wait to see what they do with it next. One hint… remember to study.

Graphics - I liked the graphics for the most part. I’m still trying to figure out why the main character always walks like that though. I also found the cinema when you turned on the game kind of confusing. It might just be me. The monster designs were also quite impressive and twisted.

Sound - I hope you’re a fan of J-Pop music, because that is what you get mostly.  There is a possibility you may start hearing the one song in your sleep. You’ll see what I mean. I was also impressed with most of the voice acting.

Gameplay - The first thing I liked was the fact that they gave you a choice between normal and easy battles at the beginning of the game. It definitely will help open the game up for more people. I also liked the fact that your teammates made intelligent choices as to what they would do in battle most of the time. Always be sure to make a few save games, in case the choices of which person you spent time with don’t go the way you want it to.

Replay/Multiplayer - I think most of the replay value is going to come from making different friends each time you play it. I don’t think there is a way you can make all of the people happy in one game. Just be careful not to blow off somebody once you make plans. That is a bad thing.
9.0 1
Story/Immersion - School kids saving the world. It’s been done before, but I really can’t think of a game where they integrated the school time so much into the story. After that you add the Japanese element into it, which adds school on Saturday, Golden Week, and other assorted things. I also can’t forget the fact that you also have exams, and you can fail them.
