The games available to download on the PSN are as varied in both style and quality as you find in a retail store. Some of them are instantly forgettable and some of them are games that you regret purchasing almost as soon as you have downloaded them. Fortunately there are also some that are excellent and thankfully Revenge of the wounded dragons falls into the latter category for me as it has such a retro feel about it and is very addictive. Compared by many to the Double Dragon series (and you can see why) I think the feel of the game is more like the old BRUCE LEE game by UK GOLD and I am sure older gamers will agree. The story involves a bullied family who are all trained in the art of Kung-Fu. One day the father is shot dead and the sister is kidnapped by his killer which leaves the two remaining siblings to avenge the death of their father and rescue their sister. The game itself is a side scrolling beat-em-up that is best played as a two player game. However it is still enjoyable as a single player game. As you walk along the screen various enemies appear, either walking on from one of the sides or coming out of doors, and you must kick them or punch them until they disappear. There are also bits of scenery that you can take advantage of to use in the fight such as baseball bats or knives etc but these all have limited use and eventually you have to go back to normal combat. The game also has a platform element to it which all adds to the fun and raises it above other side scrolling beat em ups. There is also a boss battle to each level. There are four chapters to the game each with six levels that are themed. There are also 4 mini-games and the ability for two-player action and some player vs player game play.
Graphically the game is very colourful with pleasant backdrops and very smooth animation. The sound provided can be best described as cheesy but is suitable for the type of game it is. Overall I think this is an excellent title and one of the best to appear on the PSN for a while. It is beautifully retro with some excellent entertainment value and 12 achievements for you to attempt to obtain. I doubt you will spend hours playing the game but it is a perfect title to play when you have only a short time to play. At the price it is definitely recommended. |
