If there is one company that knows how to make a puzzle game and make it well then that company is Popcap Games. For a number of years now they have been making hit after hit on the PC and thankfully now their titles are making their way onto the PSN Network and the 360 Live Arcade. Last month it was the turn of Bejeweled 2 to appear on the PSN and this month it is Zuma, a game that has been delighting people of the PC and the 360 previously.
The PSN version of the game supports no actual new features to previous versions apart from the Trophies, which are actually some of the hardest to achieve yet featured on the PSN in my opinion. Like all of Popcap’s titles Zuma is very easy to learn. I am sure the majority of you reading this have probably played it before but for those who haven’t (hang your head in shame) then this is the general idea: A line of different colour marbles wind their way along a twisting track towards a skull that is eagerly waiting to devour them and end your game for you. However your job is to fire a coloured marble into this track to make a row of three or more of the same colour. This makes these disappear. Get the timing right and you can create chain reactions which can clear a large amount of the track and buy you quite a bit of time. The level finishes when you clear all the marbles on that particular track. They are also a host of different powerups that you can activate by getting rid of that particular marble. As the meercat on the advert would say “simples” but actually it is not, as the levels progress the time gets shorter that you have before they reach the gaping mouth and the game becomes more and more frantic and enjoyable. It is also not helped when the game seems to deny you the coloured marble that you need but this just adds to the fun. The game hasn’t changed since the initial PC version and to be honest why it should when it is already as addictive as this is. The controls on the PS3 are not as accurate and precise as using a mouse on the PC but to be honest seem a little more responsive then the 360 Live Arcade version did. Overall Zuma is one of the best puzzle games out there from both Popcap and anyone else you care to mention. It is an incredibly addictive title and one that even with only two game modes will still keep you going back for more. Visually the images are sharp but to be honest there is a limit to what you can do with just marbles and a track but sound wise the music is excellent and addictive. You may even find yourself humming it long after you have turned the game off – or was that just me? An excellent game from an excellent company and I cannot wait for the next Popcap game to hit the PSN! |
