Please tell me there is no-one out there reading this, that dosent know what the game Worms is?

For the last fourteen years the developers at Team 17 have been constantly delighting us, across a whole range of consoles etc with the life sapping addictiveness of this genre. (And in my opinion it is a genre all to itself) Now, it has become available as a download from the PSN for the PS3 and I am very pleased to say it is still as wonderfully addictive as ever.

It includes both single player and multiplayer modes and to be honest is similar to the version that has been available as a download from Xbox live but with the obvious inclusion of trophies on the PS3.

For anyone who dosent know the series (And if you don’t then you cannot possibly call yourself a gamer) essentially the game is this. Set on a weird and varied landscape you have a team of four worms (which you can name yourself should you wish too). Playing either against a real opponent or the console you take it in turns to use one of the varied and sometimes funny weapons at your disposal to inflict damage on one of your opponent’s four worms. Each hit deducts a certain amount of their energy score, displayed above their heads. Once this reaches Zero, the worm in question says bye bye and turns into a gravestone. The team with the last worm standing is the winner.

Although excellent as a single player game there is just so much more fun to be had playing against one of your friends (or three as the game allows up to four people to play at once either online or using the same controller) and laughing when they accidently inflict more damage to their own troops then they do to your own.

The game comes complete with six different backgrounds although the actual battle environment is randomly generated each time you play. Of course these environments are completely destructible to allow you to get at your opponents in any way you see fit.

Overall this is Worms. Take it or leave it. Apart from the (in my opinion) disastrous divert ion into the realms of 3d a few years ago it essentially hasn’t changed over the years. Yes there has been different and weirder weapons thought up and new and interesting environments but essentially it is the same fun game that it always has been. If you have played it before then you will know what to expect and whether you will enjoy it or not.

If you are connected to the PSN and you like multiplayer games there is really no excuse, especially at this price to get this downloaded and have some fun with some friends, perhaps while having a beer or two.

Excellent, addictive, challenging and tough – exactly what a WORMS’s game should be?
