The end of another year – it doesn’t seem like two minutes since I was writing this list last year but here we are again with my choices as the top ten video games of 2009. Please remember these choices are mine and mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of anyone else connected with www.newgengamers.com

It has been an incredible year on all the systems with blockbusters spread across the year but in my opinion this is the year that the PS3 & 360 really dominated and between them they cover 9 out of the ten positions – the Wii, Psp and Ds unfortunately not making any entries in the top ten. This is not a detriment to those systems; it just highlights how many excellent titles the other two machines have had.

These have been chosen in terms of what impressed me most, what I am still playing etc and not necessarily what received the best mark from me at the time they were initially reviewed. (Also I know some of these games were multiplatform but I have listed the machine that I have played it on)

10 –Prototype – Activision (360)

An excellent action adventure title, which drew many comparisons with Infamous.  The main difference being that this title was more spectacular in terms of the destruction your character could unleash.

09 – The Saboteur – Electronic Arts (PS3)

A new franchise from Electronic Arts and it is the most recent released on the list. Not the greatest in any single department but a game that is very addictive for some unfathomable reason and a sum of all its parts.

08 – Killzone 2 – Sony (PS3)

This title, released at the beginning of the year has held the title of best FPS of all the year right the way until the release of Modern Warfare 2. A class title that despite slight faults was very difficult to be annoyed with and caused me many hours of motion sickness. Definitely hope there will be a number 3 in the future.

07 –Infamous – Sony (PS3)

In May I said this could possibly be the game of the year on the PS3. It proved not to be but is still a fantastic title with excellent graphics including some of the best cut-scenes ever. Let down only by some very minor faults it truly in my opinion is one of the best open world games of all time.

06 - Fifa 10 (360) – EA Sports (PS3)

If Fifa 09 was the year that Fifa finally took top spot from Pro Evo in the football charts then Fifa 10 is when it completely consolidated and if anything maybe even moved even slightly more ahead. No major changes but what there was made the game more realistic etc. Now all they have to do is improve the commentary and we will have the perfect football game – Fifa 11 perhaps?

05 – Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 – Activision (360)

The most hyped game possibly of all time proved to be the best FPS of the year and possibly of all time too.  The game features fantastic graphics and some of the best vocal acting of all time. It also is incredibly realistic and seems to have the Ai spot on. Many of you will probably criticise me for this not being even higher in the charts but it is a FPS with all the problems that brings me and I also thought overall this was the year of the Action Adventure game.

04 – Football Manager 10 – Sega (PC)

What would a chart be from me without the latest instalment of my favourite franchise of all time? Improved graphics and a better interface this truly is still the life sapping game it has ever been.

03 – Batman Arkham Asylum – Eidos/Warner Brothers (PS3)

This is not only the best Batman game of all time but without doubt the best Superhero game of all time. This came so close to being game of the year because of the glorious storyline, impeccable graphics and excellent soundtrack. Let down slightly by the ending, I said on its release it would take something special to beat it to Game of the year and in the end two “something specials” did.

02 – Assassin’s Creed 2 – Ubisoft (PS3)

The sequel to my game of the year from a couple of years ago that has been improved so many ways. The storyline is stronger, the graphics sharper and the gameplay has more elements to it that the first title. Incredibly addictive games that will have you going back to replay it after you have finished.

01 Uncharted 2 – Sony (PS3)

When it was released I called it one of the best video games on any console ever and I still stand by that decision. The best cut scenes ever produced, the strongest, most coherent storyline and fantastic vocal acting and soundtrack, this truly is the first true interactive movie as a videogame and one that you will keep playing time and time again until the inevitable Uncharted 3.

So there you are my top ten of the year and a list that not many are going to agree with – so many titles that were excellent have unfortunately failed to miss the final cut such as Borderlands, Empire Total War, Brutal Legend, Super Mario Brothers Wii, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box or Jak & Dexter the Lost Frontier.

In my humble opinion 2009 has been the best year for videogames so far and next year could be even better with games such as – Medal of Honour, Army of Two The 40th Day, Dead Space 2, Epic

Mickey, Star Trek Online, Bioshock 2, Crackdown 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain and Halo Reach to look forward to and that is just skimming the surface.Should be another powerful and glorious year and I look forward to it.

So here we are the end of another year and quite frankly the best year, in terms of quality that we have ever had games wise. Of course each and every magazine has printed their lists of the games of the year, whether it is officially in terms of actual sales etc or just their personal choices. So I thought just for fun, I would list mine here – and I want to point out these are MY choices and do not reflect the opinion of anyone else associated with the website. These have been chosen in terms of what impressed me most, what I am still playing etc and not necessarily what received the best mark from me at the time they were initially reviewed. (Also I know some of these games were multiplatform but I have listed the machine that I have played it on)

10 –The World Ends With You (DS) – Square Enix

In a very good year for Square Enix this is a game that has stood out and I still am playing as we enter the New Year. Graphically it pushed the DS to the limits and the soundtrack was excellent as well. The only DS title to make this list.

09 – God of War Chain of Olympus (PSP) – Sony

The only PSP title in the list and one that when it was first announced people thought couldn’t be done. Not as great as the PS2 titles and I am sure the forthcoming PS3 game will knock its socks off but still a stunning achievement and a great prequel for the franchise.

08 – No More Heroes (Wii) – Rising Star Games

The solitary title for the Wii on this list but one of the most original and fascinating games of the year with a unique graphical style and one of the greatest musical scores ever to feature in a game. One that every Wii owner should play but it won’t appeal to everyone

07 – Everybody’s Golf World Tour (PS3) – Sony

The most fun you can have playing golf and for me a much better game than the seriousness of the Tiger Woods titles. Lots for you to unlock and also lots for you to download via the PSN including the chance to play as Kratos from the God of War games.

06 - Fifa 09 (360) – EA Sports

For me this is the year that EA finally completely broke the PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER hold on the football crown. Whereas Fifa has improved year on year, Pro Evo seems to have gone backwards. This year is the best yet and deserves to be played by every football fan.

05 – Fallout 3 (Ps3) – Bethesda Softworks

A very special game in the world of video gaming with a griping main storyline and loads of side quests that you can either do or choose not to. Will you be a goodie two shoes or will you aid in the destruction of the world. You can play for hours and still not explore everywhere or do everything.

04 – Little Big Planet (PS3) – Sony

Surely this is the game that has sold more PS3’s this year than any other. An original platform game that people will keep coming back too in order to play the levels that others have put online and also featuring the cutest character of the year. Very stylish and very well presented.

03 – Football Manager 09 (PC) – Sega

My favourite franchise of all time and if this was a list of the games I have played the most this would be number 1 every year. Addictive with a new graphic match display, this literary eats your time away and will be the cause of many an argument between partners.

02 – Gears of War 2 (360) – Microsoft

The perfect sequel that actually improves on the original in every way. Better graphics, better levels and an improved multiplayer mode. A masterpiece of a game and a true definition of a must-have title and one that will keep you busy for a very long time.

01 Dead Space (Ps3) – EA Games

A new franchise for EA and one that I hope continues. Nothing new in that it is a survival horror game but one with perfect atmosphere, visually striking detail both in the cut scenes and when you play the game and a storyline that is tense, fast paced and very violent.

So there you are my top ten of the year and a list that not many are going to agree with – not place for GTAIV, Mario Kart Wii or Call of Duty World at War! But nevertheless my favourite games of the year in, like I said the best year for games so far. And the good news is that 2009 should be just as good, if not better, with games such as – Heavy Rain, Resident Evil 5, Fight Night Round 4, Aliens Colonial Marines, Batman Arkham Asylum, Halo Wars, The Conduit, Empire Total War, Assassin’s Creed 2 and Uncharted 2 to name but ten of the titles that should make an appearance at some point during the year.It is going to be a good one don’t you think?
